“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The recent commemoration of the MLK holiday, as well as Inauguration Day in the United States, presents a good time to reflect about the contribution that you want to make in the communities and world around you.

How will you use your gifts and talents to positively impact the greater good? What kind of legacy do you want to leave for future generations?

Numerous studies have shown that people thrive when there is a clear purpose and value in the work they do and when they contribute to a cause that is greater than them.

Given everything that is going on in the world around us, there is a steady increase in the expressed importance to live a life of purpose. Add in the fact that working professionals spend most of their waking hours on their respective careers, and it only makes sense that more people are seeking work that aligns with their purpose and values.

Here are three coaching questions you can ask yourself to see if your current work aligns with your purpose and values.

  1. Does your current career path and the work that you do energize you?

  2. Do you clearly see the impact and value that your work makes as it relates to your personal life, team, company, family, community, etc.?

  3. If money was not a factor, would you still do the work that you do?
